International Health Fellowships

About our Fellowships:

There is a widespread interest in pursuing international health careers but there are few opportunities for junior or even fully trained and experienced professionals to qualify for positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in our field.

Since 1985, JHU/IIP Fellowships have advanced the careers of over 200 international health professionals. Host agencies find that JHU/IIP Fellows perform the high quality technical work that is needed to enhance overall agency performance. JHU/IIP has placed Fellows at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), Nepali Technical Assistance Group, Zambian Ministry of Health, Eritrean Ministry of Health, CARE/India, PROCOSI, Institute of Nutrition for Central America and Panama (INCAP), American University in Cairo, Mozambican Ministry of Health, AMREF, Egyptian Ministry of Health, PAHO/CAREC, U.S. Coalition for Child Survival and Baltimore City Health Department. USAID has provided the major funding for JHU/IIP's Fellowships, under several different named programs, including Child Survival Fellows Program, Health and Child Survival Fellows Program, Urban Child Survival Fellows Program, Senior Technical Advisors in Residence (STAR) Program and the University Associates Program. Other generous sponsors, including WHO, UNAIDS, CARE, PAHO and Baltimore City Health Department also provided funding for Fellowship assignments.

In a 2003 external evaluation of our Fellowship Program, one of our former Fellows said: "Health and Child Survival Fellowships provide an opportunity for Fellows to spread their wings and earn the qualifications that will stand them in good stead for future employment, perhaps with USAID, while doing work that is important to them and their world". In the same evaluation it was stated that Agencies such as USAID, that agree to host Fellows, see the program as a way to get high quality technical work accomplished.

JHU/IIP has no available Fellowship assignments at this time. This is because major funding for our Fellowship Programs was curtailed in August 2006, when USAID reallocated funds for our Fellowships to another organization. Because we have no available Fellowships and no funding for Fellowships, it would be unfair to continue accepting applications. We will retain the applications of existing candidates.

We are actively seeking new sponsors for our Fellowship assignments and encourage you to check back with us often.

Meanwhile, organizations interested in sponsoring JHU/IIP Fellowships should contact for more information:
